A Team of Final Year Students of University of Moratuwa Develops A Fully Equipped Automated Hospital Bed with Mobile observation Facility
The beds were designed with the guidance of Manuka Sooriyage, Buddhika Prabath and Kavindu Prabath from the Mechatronics Section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa. This bed is designed to be customized to suit any patient’s position or treatment. The system is also available as a wheelchair, trolley, and bed. It also has the ability to store crucial data such as ECG data, blood oxygen level and blood pressure over the internet for later use.
The Intensive Care Ventilator “Medibee”
The Intensive Care Ventilator “Medibee” project by a voluntary engineering group is now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The team was able to include almost all the key features that a commercial ventilator has despite the Software/Firmware as well as the electronic design that was solely designed and developed by the team itself.
The design, as well as the first prototype, is under rigorous testing these days to make sure it is capable of saving lives very soon. The team expects to build three more devices based on the lessons learned from the first prototype, hoping that the future needs of Ventilators for Sri Lanka to be fulfilled by this initiative.
Technical capabilities of the POC: Configurable Pressure Control, Breath Cycle Time, I:E ratio, adjustable PEEP, adapt to patient’s breath in case the patient starts to breathe naturally while in the ventilator, selectable modes of operation.
Sri Lanka Navy develops a medical robot
Taking in to account a basic concept mooted by an inventor, Thushara Kelum Wadasinghe, the Navy’s Research and Development Unit developed a remote-controlled smart appliance called ‘Medi Mate’ in a bid to treat and test COVID-19 patients, allowing healthcare workers to remain at a safe distance from the highly infectious virus.
This smart appliance developed under the Navy’s patronage was handed over for the use of Dr. Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital.
This smart appliance will also help healthcare workers to diagnose ailments, communicate with patients and dispense medicine and meals to them, without getting closer to the infected people. As such, this innovative appliance will help protect doctors and healthcare workers from the highly contagious novel coronavirus, when they are dealing with COVID-19 patients.
As a new feature, this remote-controlled gadgetry also has an automated nozzle that sprays a stream of sanitizing liquid to the hands of the patient, allowing him/her to sanitize the hands before touching any equipment or drugs placed on the device.
The Research and Development Unit of Sri Lanka Navy has also developed a disinfection chamber recently and similar chambers, with added features, have been set up at Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital, and University Hospital KDU.
